JACKS HAND ...
BAM! BAM! BAM! A SUDDEN BURST OF GUNFIRE hits the GERMAN. He looks at
JACK with a kind of confused SORROW ... and ROLLS OFF THE WING.
JACK
(shocked)
NO!!
ANOTHER CAMEL is flying just a few feet off JACKS TAIL . .. It dives
away.
TRACER FIRE rips into JACKS PLANE ... He SPINS AROUND, confronted with
a TERRIFYING SIGHT!

BLACK SCREEN
And in the darkness, a TICKING sound is heard. Soft and
steady -- soothing -- and then a BANG!

FLAME and EXPLODING MUD scatter above us. Men scream and die around us. The screams amid the GUNFIRE and EXPLOSIONS are piercing and terrible, as though the jungle itself is frightened.
An AMERICAN wearing a jungle hat with a large Peace Sign on it, wearing war paint, bends TOWARD US, reaching down TOWARD US with a large knife, preparing to scalp the dead.
OUR VIEW MOVES AWAY, along with the runn
flame. It passes; its
blue fire surging into the screen.
"THE THING"
A thundering...
FADE TO:
A BLIND AND FERAL WHITENESS
... Glacial desert... gusts of snow... superimpose:
ANTARCTICA 1982 WINTER
A SOUND
Loud and strident. A helicopter streaks across frame. It
travels precariously close to the ground; its chassis
battered and swayed by the wind.
INT. COPTER
Red dials beam on the faces of two men
as their
voices echo in the sky.
THE CHILDREN (contd)
Seven eight, gonna stay up late...
Jacob takes his hands away from his face and starts to
frantically pull on his seat belt. SNAP - it flies off his
back and miraculously turns into a PARACHUTE. Rope swirls
into the air - the wind grabs the canvas - and Jacobs body
slows with a violent jerk.
